After India defeating Bangladesh in 1st T20 of Asia Cup 2016 with a huge margin of 45 runs, its time for Sri Lanka to start their series with a win against the underdog UAE and lead the points table. The second match ,Sri Lanka vs UAE, of the Asia Cup 2016 will be played on Thursday, 25th February 2016, at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Sri Lanka, the defending champion 2014, will like to win their first match with a great margin to boost themselves and come back into the winning platform. Since the last two series against India and New Zealand were a disastrous for them as they lost both the series in the absence of their senior players Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath. The return of their senior players back into the playing squad will increase the morale of the team. The top order batsman Dilshan will be the key player with the middle order batsman Chamara Kapugedara and Anglo Mathews. Huge shots round the boundaries are much expected from the bat of Thisara Parera and Mathews.
The only good thing for Sri Lanka against India series was the impressive bowling by their youngster Dushmantha Chameera. If he is included in the playing XI, the bowling will be strengthened more.
On the other hand United Arab Emirates (UAE) has surprised everyone by qualifying for Asia Cup 2016. UAE secured their qualification against Hong Kong, Oman and Afghanistan. Though the team has made their way to qualification with an all round performance but their further journey in Asia Cup 2016 will not be the easy one as they have to compete with the few of the top World teams.
Since T20 format of the cricket is a game of uncertainties, we can only expect UAE to give a strong competition to five times champion Sri Lanka.
Previous Performance of Sri Lanka in Asia Cup –
The defending Champion has been playing in Asia Cup since the first tournament in 1984. Sri Lanka have won the championship 5 times (1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014). They have played 48 matches, won 34 and lost 14 with winning percentage of 70.83.
Previous Performance of UAE in Asia Cup –
UAE has qualified only two times for Asia Cup in 2004 and 2008. The team had played 4 group matches and lost all. But this time Asia Cup is being played in T20 format in which they have won all three matches in qualifier round.
